Summary

It can be intimidating to navigate local resources, with lots of mixed information about what services cost, how to book an appointment, or what to expect. This initiative encourages help-seeking in your community by taking the guesswork out of it and guiding people through the process.

The Story Behind This Initiative:

We run a mental health peer support club on campus, and the idea for this initiative stems from our experience with informational pamphlets. We used pamphlets as a starting point to raise awareness about safe spaces that people can seek when they’re struggling with their mental health. We’ve learned that, while resource awareness is very important, resources - and how we access them - need to be tailored to our community's needs. In our community, for example, we have a very high number of Indigenous and Francophone youth. These are groups that face higher risk of discrimination and isolation. We hope this initiative gets people thinking about the barriers to accessing support that their community faces, and helps people begin the journey of seeking support with more confidence and knowledge!
Jessica Landry and Nathaniel Oriecuia designed this initiative and work to improve mental health at Lakehead University.
