Why Body Image and Eating Disorders?

It’s estimated that 1 million people in Canada live with an eating disorder.

And the consequences of that are serious: eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses, at an estimated 10% to 15%. But still, it’s estimated that only 1 in 10 people with an eating disorder will get treatment. For things to change, we need to recognize that anyone can live with an eating disorder, regardless of their background, and we need to push back against diet-culture and fatphobia, which make body image concerns so normal that we don’t always see when someone needs support.

This Jack Originals project is a multidisciplinary deep-dive into body image and eating disorders. Our hope is that these conversations will empower people to reach out for support if they’re struggling, and that those around them will be prepared with the right knowledge to support them.
